Spectrum of colors

Lovely autumn colors are finally here! I have wishes to go and collect some nice leaves for craft things during the coming weekend. For those of you who have checked Instagram you may have seen few captions from Finnish forest from the previous weekend. I was hunting mushrooms for a pie which I must say turned out so good (my first time!) that there was hardly a piece left on the next morning.

Junia, my little forest sprite, the guardian of a hidden forest fall, finally got

SAMSUNG CSCa new dress for herself. This was rather to test a new pattern than to have a specific idea but I like the outcome. Since the first dress was off-white lace dress I wanted something darker with few details. The lovely fabric has been previously brought from China by my dear friend. There are still few pieces left to make lovely little things. =^^=

Overall I like the mini gem/faery size from Soom. Delicate, tiny and beautiful. Otherwise quite a tricky one to find clothing / wigs / eyes for though!

Moreover, I am happy to start off a commission work during the weekend. This relates to an animation I am myself a fan of so I suppose it will spark my inspiration for the whole process. Completing this commission will be my priority for the next few weeks.

Halloween is coming too. It is one of my favorite seasonal celebrations but despite this fact I have been unable to complete anything suitable to the theme during these last two years. This year, provided I have enough time I plan to complete a set for Pullips / Pureneemos just in time for Halloween. Looking forward to it even myself!

So as the seasons turn towards the coming winter I notice my time to be somewhat limited. I must confess I haven’t been able to keep up with one post per week so my next statement and objective is to post at least one post per month. Therefore there may be more or there might not be more but at least this one per month. I have been satisfied with the regular monthly schedule so sticking with it as a basis seems like a good idea.

Lune has found her style, more or less, and seems to hang out around my many books.

Instagram & Volks Dollfie Dreams

Instagram my dear ladies and gentlemen!

More updates for the new year! Tsukifly has an instagram account. I welcome everyone to follow as I intend to drop teasers of the new/on-going projects through that channel. One such teaser is already in, showing off the other new creation for the next Etsy update. I felt it was time to get around intagram also because I have been told for quite some time I should get one… So there you are ^^

Volks Dollfie Dreams

Another topic to discuss are Volks Dollfie Dreams. It has been 12 years since I first found these lovely dolls made of vinyl. So light compared to resin and their cute anime looks guarantee their appeal. They also hold their poses well, much better than the strings of the regular BJDs. Various possibilities to create a suitable body & head combination in size and style generally give you rather free playground.

Speaking of DDs I consider I have some experience as I started my BJD hobby with a DD. In 2005 my DD was the first one in Finland (to my knowledge). She was a Volks DD Sirius product model (white ver.) An old picture of how she turned out to look over the years. However, sad to say I later sold across the world for she didn’t inspire me anymore as she used to. I must also say I wasn’t such a big fan of the base body II she used to have.

When I think back the possibilities with DDs there were not that many. Only normal skin color existed, limited supply of parts and optional heads. Now we have white, semi-white and normal. Four bust types, two torso types, four sizes: DD dynamite (DDdy), Dollfie Dream Sister (DDS), DD (original base bodies such as II and III) and Mini Dollfie Dream (MDD). Then these different torso types, the newest probably being the one-piece torso. More optional heads, more hands (I should order some!)

After having sold my first DD doll, I didn’t have one for a year or two. At some point I started to look back at them for the lightness and their overall looks still had appeal over me. A lot of new models had come around as well. I don’t quite remember how I came across Saber and there are many versions of her but the one with green eyes! Well, I was sold. Once again. The problem was how to find the right version and how to get her head 30521295210_61a5834920_bas I didn’t want the body of the original release.

Strangely enough it didn’t take all that long until a head of the right version appeared around DoA. Of course I had to jump on the opportunity! I wanted a little shorter DDS body for her so I got all the relevant pieces through DoA as well. Back in 2014 I did an assembling guide of DDS body as I got the parts of the DDS body. The Saber Extra head came around a month or so later. My second DD girl was home.

My Saber’s name is Rein. However, any character plans I may have had  for her didn’t seem quite right. I was already at the brink of selling her on more than one occasion. It seemed her style started to came around at the last minute as I got a milky white ringlet wig that is so far certainly my favorite on her. Now she has a rough sketch of a story/character linked to few other characters. I should get around writing it down. Also I now have an idea of some clothes I would like to try for her. Great timing for inspiration as I intent to make use of some of the fabrics I have stored in my boxes.

A long standing dream – for such time Volks will hopefully again re-release her (Sasara Kusugawa) with some other body than DDdy or I happen to come across some dazzling opportunity to get her otherwise. The prices are ludicrous at present…

Another thing I may consider at some point, largely because of the size, is an MDD. Even more compact size than DDS I would like to have one as a model. No character ideas for such a thing though. Smaller sizes are not that easy for me. I have had plenty of tinies and MSD sized dolls but usually I end up selling them after trying a while to bond with them. So far only three in smaller sizes have remained. Two MSDs and a tiny. SD or the size ~ 58cm seems to be my favorite.

And! A new light background for the blog as well. A minor change as I still like the overall layout of the blog. Although I noticed I should update the header photo as well. Some of the photos are rather old and it is also missing Lunetta altogether…

Liebster Award

I was tagged by Ide, my dear friend and the keeper of Cups of Resin BJD-blog.

To begin with I should say I haven’t really provided answers to these kind of questions previously anywhere so I think it is high time to answer them. Thus, thank you Ide for presenting such an interesting set of questions for me to answer! (Although even this took a while to answer…) At the same time this provides me a great reason to post something for the blog besides the Tsukifly related updates =^^=

The rules:

  1. Thank the person who presented you the award and link back to their blog.
  2. Post the award image on your blog.
  3. Answer 11 questions posted by the presenter.
  4. Nominate 5-11 blogs with less than 200 followers.
  5. Create 11 questions for the nominees to answer.
  6. List these rules in your post.
  7. Inform the people you chose of their nomination by leaving a comment on their blog and link them your post.

The questions (by Ide)

I. When and how did you discover the hobby?

I was doing a presentation on Gothic Lolita all those years ago, in 2005 and happened to make a search for some pictures through Google. Among the relevant pictures there was a picture of Volks FCS custom girl made to look like Mana with Moi-même-Moitié styled clothing. That picture did not leave me alone and later I discovered Volks and some other dolls companies along with the general information of ABJDs.

II. What made you stay?

While I recognize I have had my active and inactive periods along all these years with BJDs I suppose I have always been able to discover something new within the hobby. Be that an activity to do with your dolls or changing the style of your existing dolls to something completely different I have never been bored with them. If nothing else they are a pleasure to look at.

III. How do you feel about the aging of BJDs (yellowing etc.)?

I do not consider it as a major problem although with white skin dolls the yellowing may not always come out in the best possible way. It is somewhat inevitable and it will not effect how I approach them. The reason why I would end up selling a doll would not have to do with its yellowing/aging but rather with other factors.

IV. Do your dolls have a common “theme” ( a common backstory, certain types of clothes etc.)?

I might have had a kind of common backstory at some point, but looking my doll crew how it is today, I think such a common backstory was lost somewhere along the way. Rather I should say that there are multiple stories, some dolls belong into one, while some other dolls belong to the other. Probably a good divider would be the nature of the dolls / stories. I suppose there is one greatly magical fantasy story with elfs, fauns and pixies alike and one closer to reality with only humans in it. My interest lies with the fantasy story and thus the other story has gone pretty much undeveloped other than gaining new characters. We will see how they develop in the future.

V. Do you prefer fullsets or customizing and why?

I prefer customizing, because only then you are able to make the doll to reflect your personal views of a character you have developed for that particular sculpt. I do have few fullsets but even they, although having a default face-up and clothing, have usually ended up looking quite different from what the doll looked in its fullset pictures. A good example of this is my Tori (Dollmore Cherry Dream Torrie). She was a fullset but my little dark lady hardly resembles the one shown in her promo pictures. She has transformed along the way.

VI. If you do customize, what is your favorite thing to shop for (i.e. wig, eyes etc.)? If you prefer fullsets, do you shop for props or similar things for you dolls?

Since I already stated I prefer to customize I think I can disregard the rest of the question and go for the first part of it. I think if I have to name something that would be wigs rather than eyes, but for the reason unknown, wigs are rather hard to select sometimes, it is not easy to picture how a certain colour may look and even if you thought something would be perfect you may well later discover this is not the case.

VII. Do you prefer certain size BJDs (YoSD, MSD, SD etc.) and why?

Previously I was mainly for SDs, because that seemed to be the size that worked for me but later my doll crew has developed in such a way that now it comprises of many different sizes, actually the more different sizes there are the better for Tsukifly as well.

VIII. Where do you find names for your dolls (if you name them at all)?

Various name sites. Sometimes it takes less time, sometimes more time and consideration. It is important for me that the names of my dolls reflect their characters in one way or another.

IX. Where do you display/store your dolls?

I do both, some are on display, others in their boxes/in a closet. I like to take turns with them and sometimes it is good to have a moment without seeing one or the other, because it is much more wonderful to display them again after a longer while.

X. What would you like to see created/improved on by doll companies/artists?

Such a hard question. I prefer to wait and see.

XI. Do you see the BJD community (online or IRL) as a significant part of your hobbying?

Yes and no. This depends how much time I have for the hobbying. I read DoA and national forums rather more regularly than meet people IRL, but this again is more time and place decision than anything else. But online forums are significant in the sense that it is nice to discuss about similar ideas, have a venue through which to exchange pictures, buy / sell and discuss. I suppose the answer depends on which one of the two (online or IRL) you mean.

I do not wish to point out any blogs in particular, since I hardly have time to read blogs on my free time (I plan to change this in the future). But I would like to take the opportunity and welcome those wishing to answer the following set of question to please do so. I look forward to your answers!

11 Questions

  1. Why are you a BJD hobbyist?
  2. Which doll model was the first one to catch you attention and why?
  3. Do you make a character for your doll/s before or after selecting a doll model?
  4. How many dolls you currently have?
  5. Have you set a threshold/limit to the amount of dolls you own?
  6. If you could buy all dolls on your wishlist what would the total be?
  7. What are the main things you like to do with your dolls?
  8. Have you learned new skills with dolls?
  9. Do your dolls age or have you fixed a specific age for them?
  10. Do your dolls have their own set of clothes or do they share everything?
  11. Do you like to have a lot of spare items to try out/change styles for your dolls or just a spare minimum?

Enjoy ~

Winds of relocation

The feeling when several things are happening at once.

For Tsukifly the year 2016 seems to be a year of transformation. Since Tsukifly’s official establishment in May 2013 the brand has experienced more active periods as well as periods of total silence. As Tsukifly creations are directly connected to it’s creator’s situation in life, the less active periods are those with high professional / study activity. The balance has finally been found (more or less) so that neither the professional life or the Tsukifly would need to be left completely on its own.

As a platform for Tsukifly blog I have now decided to go for WordPress.com and thus I will cease to update the old Tsukifly blog previously located at blogspot. I find WordPress blog easier to customize, maintain and review.

tsukiflyI stated my ambitious plan to update the blog at least once a month along with at least one new creation. Looking at my design plans I can promise that sizes will vary, materials will vary and each dress set will be OOAK. I will include my doll related planning among the posts about Tsukifly so that this blog willc continue to be about dolls in general, my plans related to them and Tsukifly designs.

Even before this first blog post at Worldpress, I took another leap of faith and established the long planned Etsy shop for Tsukifly. Therefore Tsukifly at Etsy is now a reality and I intend to update the shop regularly with new designs. Please note that regarding the Tsukifly creations I may also be contacted elsewhere before I can make them available at Etsy in which case certain OOAK sets may never appear in Etsy. Thus, if you are interested in something please contact me.

Airy dress set for tiny/YO-SD (now at Etsy) is the newest creation of Tsukifly. The set includes the dress with cute details and a flower headpiece. A pattern fabric bloomers are also a new piece made last weekend, the same size appears to fit tiny/Yo-sd, Dust of Dolls and Minifee sized dolls. Similar bloomers will be seen as a part of Tsukifly designs as well as a separate mix & match piece. I am also in the process of making a functional design for SD, Cerisedolls and Supergem sized dolls.

If you wish to know more about Tsukifly and the doll family (the dolls that appear as Tsukifly models) please take a look at the ‘About Me‘ page. While I am generally not very good at updating anything I intent to keep this page up-to-date. The doll family has experienced some changes over the years as my plans for the dolls have changed. I am also determined to keep the size of my collection at around 10. However, if you do not find information and you would like to know something, about a specific doll or a piece of clothing etc. please contact me and I will be happy to tell you more.

This is pretty much everything for the first blog post in this new location. Rather general recap of everything to start with. Following this blog post any new updates will now start to appear here from this day onward. I would thus recommend the followers of the blogspot blog to update their bookmarks.
